Dutch Bros: elevated rewards campaigns flagged an inflection
Random Walk's promotional-email AI flagged a near-tripling in Dutch Bros' loyalty-points campaign cadence months before the print. Points and bonus-point sends rose to 69 between Apr 1 and Jul 19 from 23 a year earlier, about four months before management guided Q3 comps to 4–5% from 5.8%.
Victoria's Secret: declines in email campaigns uncovered an inflection
For months before the 45% inflection, our promotional ensemble showed Victoria's Secret pulling back on email: the steep discount index fell more than 35%, incentives like "extra 10%" and "free" faded, and the brand sent nearly 200 fewer campaigns in the first half. The quarter brought a 240 bps gross margin expansion and a "promo detox" from management.
Sprouts: incentive emails surged ahead of a comp reversal
Through the first quarter of 2026, Sprouts sent about twice last year's promotional email and roughly 18 times the incentive promotions, while average discounts stayed shallow at 2–3%. On April 29 it reported comparable store sales of −1.7%, against +11.7% a year earlier, and guided the second quarter to −2% to 0%.
RH: deep-discount email surged into spring 2024
From March through May 2024, RH sent about 28 times the prior year's volume of steep-discount promotional email. Recurring "up to 80%" offers, outlet closeout sales and a 50–80% off-everything Spring Clearance Event, capped with an extra 10%, peaked the week of April 29. The quarter, which ended May 4, brought a 350 bps gross margin decline and an adjusted loss.
Nike: wholesale partners sent record discounts
Promotions direct from Nike were stable, but our keyword tracker captured record volumes of Nike coupons from its wholesale partners. Foot Locker's "Nike" emails rose 67% year over year for May–July, Academy's 49% and Shoe Carnival's 2,783%, signaling lagging organic demand as Nike's revenue growth slowed to 5% from 14%.
VF Corp: the promotional ensemble flagged North Face and Vans
In August 2022 email discounting at North Face and Vans hit levels never seen in six years of data, and we alerted clients on August 15. Within about two months VF Corp cut its FY23 outlook three times, inventory rose 17% quarter over quarter, the Chairman and CEO retired and the shares fell 41% by year-end.
