Dutch Bros: elevated rewards campaigns flagged an inflection

Random Walk's promotional-email AI flagged a near-tripling in Dutch Bros' loyalty-points campaign cadence months before the print. It was a leading signal behind management's softer Q3 comp guide.

What changed

On the Q1 (May 6) and Q2 (Aug 5) 2026 calls, CEO Christine Barone said Dutch Bros is still early in personalizing Dutch Rewards, with win-back offers, frequency-level campaigns and a new "streaks" mechanic. The program now covers more than 73% of transactions.

Our send data shows what that looked like in customers' inboxes. Points and bonus-point campaigns to BROS' list nearly tripled, to 69 sends between Apr 1 and Jul 19, 2026, from 23 a year earlier. Merch and sticker drops stayed roughly flat. At the Aug 5 print, management guided Q3 system comp to about 4–5%, down from 5.8% in Q2.

Connecting the dots

Loyalty intensity vs. the comp deceleration

CFO Josh Guenser attributed the softer Q3 system comp guide, about 4–5% after 5.8% in Q2, to tougher transaction comparisons, lower effective pricing and lapping the food-program rollout. Barone credited Dutch Rewards, not price, with its strongest contribution to comp yet.

Read together, BROS is leaning on points-based engagement as its pricing tailwind fades. The send data suggests this is structural: total promotional campaign volume has roughly doubled or more every year since 2024.

Conclusion

The beat masked a mix shift

The Q2 beat masks a mix shift that showed up first in the email data. How durable BROS' comp proves to be increasingly depends on how much further the points lever can be pulled. We will keep tracking it in near real time.
