RH: deep-discount email surged into spring 2024

From March through May 2024, RH sent about 28 times last year's volume of steep-discount promotional email. Recurring "up to 80%" offers, outlet closeout sales and a 50–80% off-everything clearance event peaked the week of April 29. Q1 gross margin fell 350 bps and adjusted EPS swung to a loss.

What changed

Through most of 2022 and early 2023, RH's sale announcements were occasional spikes on a near-zero base. From late August 2023 the pattern flipped: deep-discount announcements became a weekly fixture, and by spring 2024 they were setting new highs.

Over the 13 weeks from March 4 to June 2, 2024, RH sent 112.5M steep-discount promotional emails, against 4.0M in the same weeks of 2023. The number of steep-discount campaigns rose to 69 from 10.

Urgency words joined the discounts

Alongside deeper offers, subject lines leaned on deadline and extension language, a pattern we track as a sign a brand is pushing harder for demand:

The outcome

Q1 margins compressed

RH's fiscal first quarter ended May 4, 2024, the same day the 50–80% Spring Clearance Event closed. The results showed the cost of the push:

Management tied the softness to the housing market and rates, saying it expects "business conditions to remain challenging until interest rates ease and the housing market begins to rebound."

Conclusion

A luxury brand leaning on markdowns

RH positions itself as a luxury brand, which makes a sustained climb in 50–80% off messaging a meaningful signal. In spring 2024, the deepest offers of the period arrived with storewide framing, stacked extra discounts and extensions: the email pattern of a brand working harder to move demand. The quarter that followed delivered a 350 bps gross margin decline and demand growth below guidance.
